The Hampton Ranch is 33,654 deeded acres in Northeastern New Mexico. Located just north of Tucumcari and 20 miles west of Logan along the Canadian River. Elevations range from 3,900’ to 4,600’. The terrain starts from river bottom along a 7 mile meandering stretch of the Canadian River along with a Bosque. Past the Bosque begins a Saccatone plain consisting of several hundred acres of dense grasses. The ground begins to turn into rolling pastures to the east and mesa lands to the north and west. The primary grasses are Blue Gramma, Black Gramma, SideOats Gramma, Western Crested Wheatgrass, Saccatone and along the river and creeks one can find native Bermuda. There are groves of cottonwood trees along the Canadian River as well as many groupings of cottonwoods along the natural springs, dirt tanks and sub-irrigated portions of the ranch. Mesquite is predominant thru-out the ranch. Juniper and Pinon is found along the draws and thru-out the mesa land.
The ranch is very well improved, including waterings, fences, multiple sets of corrals, cattle chutes, calf table, 20 ton set of scales and a 10 stall horse facility. The headquarters consists of a set of steel pipe pens, loading and unloading chutes, a W & W hydraulic chute and scales. The main working area is all under roof. Adjacent to the horse facility is a nice roping area and bunkhouse. There are 2 homes near the working area for the help and the main home is a short distance away. In addition, there is a 40’ X 100’ shop with 2 overhead doors and a 30’ X 50’ steel hay barn. There are 3 other separate working facilities located around the ranch. The ranch is separated into 9 pastures with 5 traps near the shipping facilities.
There are 17 wells thru-out the property. 16 of the wells pump from approx. 120’. The well on top of the mesa is drilled to 630’ and is pumped from approx. 350’. There are 18 earthen tanks and one that is considered a dam retaining in excess of 30 surface acres of water. The headquarters is served with power as well as the main house and those wells are submersibles. All other wells are either windmills or solar. Caros and Tarkey creeks cross the ranch flowing from the north to the Canadian. There are numerous springs doting the ranch plus the approximate 7 miles of the River cutting thru the south side of the ranch.
Historically this ranch has been a solid 800 head cow/calf operation. The ranch is accessed from Logan. Tucumcari can be seen from many places on the ranch but, with the Canadian in between, any time Conchas Dam runs over or heavy rains occur upstream- crossings may be washed out.
In addition, the ranch has abundant wildlife and hunting. Some of the big game include, Elk, Mule Deer, Barbary Sheep, Whitetail Deer and Antelope as well as Wild Turkey, Dove, Quail, Ducks, Geese and Sandhill Crane.
